Meet Our Team!

Jared R. Auclair, Ph.D
Dean, College of Professional Studies
Jared R. Auclair is currently the Dean of the College of Professional Studies. In addition to this role, Dr. Auclair directs the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Laboratory. This latter appointment allows Dr. Auclair to collaborate with both academic researchers and industry in the area of biopharmaceutical development and analysis. He has expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, analytical chemistry, protein crystallography, and biological mass spectrometry, and is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
Kathi Durning
Assistant Director of BATL
Kathi Durning has been at Northeastern University in the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Lab since 2018. Prior to joining BATL, she was in the pharmaceutical industry for >14 years in various administrative and operational roles. She brings a broad range of experience in learning to both internally focused and externally facing audiences, with an understanding the user’s perspective to make it a positive experience. Kathi enjoys the fast-moving pace of the lab as it evolves from not only a state-of-the-art training facility but also to a world class research facility.

Luis Viskatis
Lab Manager
Luis Viskatis joined Northeastern University in the Summer of 2019 as Lab Manager of BATL after almost two decades of working in the biotech industry. He is experienced in scientific research, startup company operations, process development and large-scale mammalian cell culture for the clinical and commercial manufacturing of recombinant proteins in FDA regulated environments and participated in several technology transfer teams to bring new molecules from R&D to cGMP manufacturing. He has a master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires. He is currently collaborating with the establishment of the new biomanufacturing training and research area at BATL and collaborated with the formation of the Life Sciences Testing Center, which he currently supports operationally as its Lab Manager.

Patty Flint
Patricia Flint serves as the Assistant Vice President for Interdisciplinary Science Initiatives in the Office of Advancement. In this capacity, she works across the University to secure philanthropic support for students, programs and research. Specifically, her primary areas include BATL, the Marine Science Center, the Ocean Genome Legacy Center, Barnett Institute and the Roux Institute. Ms. Flint has been at Northeastern for 14 years. Prior to joining the team at Northeastern University, she spent 10 years both at the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University and at Boston University. Ms. Flint holds a Masters in Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.

Anantdeep Kaur
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Dr. Anantdeep Kaur specializes in Biotechnology and is excited to develop her knowledge and collaborate with her peers in the area of Biopharmaceutical Analysis. She received her education at the University of Technology Sydney with a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Biotechnology. She is experienced in scientific research, intellectual property management, clinical verification and validation, biotech start-up company operations, clinical and commercial manufacturing of diagnostic assays in FDA regulated environments. She hopes to apply her skills to develop novel therapeutics and biomedical solutions focused on solving public health problems.

Timeline
Why Start BATL
Dramatic scientific advances during the past 25 years in the field of biopharmaceuticals have had a profound impact on diagnosis of conditions and the therapies available to physicians and their patients. Today, biologically active therapeutics allow doctors to manage chronic illnesses and diseases that, years ago, carried a death sentence. Yet despite the improvement in therapies yielded by the advent of biotechnology, regulatory issues in many countries still need to be addressed.

2014
It all started with an idea
BATL is established as a partnership with Northeastern University’s Barnett Institute to provide a source for experiential learning-based trainings.

2016
BATL gains recognition
BATL is recognized by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) as one of its two Centersof Excellence and began offering CoE training at the Burlington campus and in Seoul, S. Korea.

2017
Expanding our training
BATL adds ICH-Q1 (International Council of Harmonisation) to its training in Burlington. Participants come from around the globe.

Building connections
Biogen, Genentech-Roche, and Pfizer become BATL's corporate partners.

2018
Expanding our global outreach
BATL brings its regulatory compliance training globally to South America (Brazil) and Asia (China). Construction starts on its state-of-the-art lab in the new building on the Burlington campus.

2019
Reaching all corners of the world
BATL’s trainings extend to Africa, as well as Asia, Europe, South America. BATL-Northeastern University is recognized as an ICH Training Associate. WHO and BATL collaborate to train members of its organization.

Building V
BATL moves into its new space in Building V, Burlington and begins the build-out for biomanufacturing.

2020
Joining the fight against COVID-19
The year of the pandemic, BATL transforms part of its lab and classroom space for the university’s COVID-19 testing center. Plans continue with industry partners to collaborate on research, while training moves online.
